The Hannover Reinsurance Group Africa (Proprietary) Limited, which was founded in 1952, has developed into one of Africa's largest reinsurers. It has today emerged as a diversified reinsurance group, combining the security and expertise of European professionals with traditional South African values. Its strong South African premium income base has been expanded to include business from more than twenty African countries. The geographical scope is Sub-Saharan Africa.

In addition to being a leading player in the classes of business traditionally requiring significant reinsurance support, Hannover Re Africa has actively explored and initiated new ideas and concepts. The Group is proud that this innovative thinking has generally resulted in insurers expanding their portfolios through the production of new income for the industry, rather than undercutting the prices of existing business.

The core portfolios continue to show good growth. In addition Hannover Re Africa has a subsidiary, Lireas Holdings, which is an attractive investment holding company for insurance-related investments.

Arabic Speaking Countries

Treaty reinsurance business emanating from North African and Middle Eastern Arabic speaking countries is underwritten exclusively in our Home Office in Hannover, Germany.

Being committed to the full range of services a professional reinsurer can offer, we quote and write all types of  programmes in all lines of business, including proportional, per risk and catastrophe Excess of Loss (XoL) treaties, multi-line programmes, and treaties with a financial component.

In addition, our office in Hannover is staffed by experienced professionals in agricultural risks who carry out underwriting and claims audits in this special field of business.

Whilst we continue to be a market for protections on a proportional basis for the overall markets, we would concentrate with some emphasis on  clients with specialised or niche portfolios. Once convinced of a long-term mutually satisfactory relationship, we are able to provide large capacities.

In close cooperation with our clients, we endeavour to develop solutions for coping with the problem of excessive acquisition costs that undermine the vitally necessary margins for insurers and reinsurers alike.

High acquisition costs, combined with high internal administrative expenses of direct writing companies, combined with insufficient original market rates, quite often make it difficult for us to give proportional support to our clients. This is the reason why we prefer to give priority to XOL solutions.
